It is certainly up to an individual to commit to fighting for ones country.

There is really nothing new about this situation as this has been the case following each war. War creates an economy for SOME, not for ALL. When a certain GROUP is "funded" by a war economy, little of the money is ever spent, thus a recession results.

As the song goes, "when will they ever learn?" This situation is status quo as long as the administrative mind pulls the strings.

    Pragmatists are to blame.

Funny, I was just talking about this a couple of hours ago. I have several friends that are either Nat'l Guard or Army (and a couple Marines) that have been through deployments. The Marines all have jobs, but the Nat'l Guard and Army ones do not... ??? I don't get it. They're good enough to fight for our country and possibly give the ultimate sacrifice, their life, but not good enough for someone to employ. It's a frustrating job market for everyone out there (at least here in Michigan), but shouldn't our vets be given some kind of priority??

Why can't we use the national guard for public works projects. We have a crumbling infrastructure that needs fixing. National guard troops could do these projects cheaper than bidding it out to the huge construction giants. That way most of the money goes straight to the working class and into the economy, without a huge percentage being syphoned off for CEO wages and benefits. It is win win all around. Further let the politicians try to vote against employing these men and women who have been serving in a war zone. It would be political suicide.

Most of my friends in the armed forces are still in the armed forces - I'm a year out of college - and pretty happy to be. Considering the advantages that most seem to agree that they'll get when they return to an improved job market [they hope], I understand.

I hope this won't be the situation when they return.

I truly hope that these young men and women do not re-enlist as an option. Obama would send them straight to Pakistan and that is not bringing our troops home as promised.

Maybe their best option is to go to college at this time on their GI benefits and work towards jobs that would fit into the alternative energy field. They are young enough to go back to school and train for careers for the future. Working on Stimulus Plan projects would only be temporary employment.

I think the shock of actually seeing what they have been hearing is true must have been bad for them. We all read these articles about desperate situations but if you aren't actually living them, it doesn't quite sink in.

So far my family has been lucky but it may not last that much longer. I must say that after WWII Eisenhauer deported all the illegal aliens just so the soldiers would have jobs to come home to though.

Brings to mind Stevie Wonder's 1970's song 'Front Line':

"They had me standing on the front line...now I stand at the back of the line when it comes to gettin' ahead." It's on Youtube. There is a good video with pictures/images--scroll down a few to find it.

              Stevie Wonder Front Line Lyrics:

I am a veteran of the war
I up and joined the and a tiny salty pill
To stop the big urge I might have for the wrong kind of thrill
They put a gun in my hand and said, "shoot until he's dead"
But it's hard to kill when 'please your friend' echoes through your head

Brought up in church taught no man should take another's life
But then put in a jungle where life has no price

They had me standing on the front line
They had me standing on the front line
They had me standing on the front line
But now I stand at the back of the line when it comes to gettin' ahead

Back in the world the paper reads today
Another war is in the brewing
But what about the lives of yesterday
And the many happy families that have been ruined

My niece is a hooker and my nephew's a junkie too
But they say I have no right to tell them how they should do
They laugh and say "quit bragging" 'bout the
war you should never have been in
But my mind is so brain-washed I'd prob'bly go back and do it again

I walk the neighborhood parading my purple heart
With a fear of agent orange that no one will stop

They had me standing on the front line
They had me standing on the front line
They had me standing on the front line
But now I stand at the back of the line when it comes to gettin' ahead

Last try. I'm proof reading these attempts very carefully. The lyrics are showing up just fine when posting but when later reviewing them, they're messed up. Again, simply Google search to get them correctly. But will try the first paragraph once more:

I am a veteran of the war
I up and joined the army back in 1964
At sixteen I just had to be a man at any cost
I volunteered for Vietnam where I got my leg shot off
I recall a quote from a movie that said "who's more a man
Than a man with a reason that's worth dyin' for"

anyone remember viet nam?that thing really ended in'72 and those were not good times either.i like the fact that when prospective employers are informed that these vets need work they are put to the front of the line.but the sad fact is that there are too many people(vets and non-vets) who need work and not enough jobs.the entire situation is simply a product of corporate greed and government incompetence and as in 1972,those who are least responsible will pay the heaviest price.

I am SO sick of the media droning on and on about the economy and how bad it is. The economy was in a bit of a recession last year, UNTIL...the media picks it up and does it's usual thing....they make sure every news story has some kind of link to how bad the economy is. THIS RECESSION WAS CAUSED BY THE MEDIA!! The media caused a general panic and tanked consumer confidence.

Find some real news to report on and let us move on with our lives and get past this.

Chuck - this economy is being run by democrats. Has been since 2007. You have Nancy Pelosi, Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, and then President Obama was elected to strengthen their hand in this mess. This is what you get with a liberal view of things running the show. It will get better when we have better people calling the shots. I am not saying republicans, I am saying better people. And yes, the media has had a lot to do with the way people are viewing our current state. They started encouraging people to walk away from their morrtgages about two years ago. I remember talking about it with my wife back then. I could not believe that you were hearing the news shows telling people that they were going to buried in their mortgages and all they would be able to do would be walk away. That is not positive thinking in my book.

Lemme me guess, you're a liberal and you are just going to sit back and wait for the liberal policy makers to make your life better. Have a long wait buddy.

I also own a business and would gladly hire a returning vet if there was work for them.

Really you guys are going to go with that pile of bull. No real recession and any that does exist is the DEMs and the Media's fault. Wow, how incredible inventive. No room in there for the banking/investment guys who upended the system. They have been stripping down the regulations on the banking system since Reagan(remember the S&Ls). I think there is plenty of room in the booby hut for both parties on this one.

This Recession was caused by the Senate And Congress passing the minimum wage increases! Read Economics 101.............every minimum wage increase is followed by a Recession. Pelosi did this to us and even wrote in yearly raises in the min. wage so how do we get out of that?

Actually Carter wrote so many regulations on the S & L's that the banking system could not function at all. Reagan did away with what Carter put in so that the banks could function again. During Carter's administration we had a mortgage with 14% interest on it. Clinton went even farther with deregulating banks which caused a disasterous mess.

                          Sources please?

The S.& L. crisis has been written out of the Reagan hagiography, but the fact is that deregulation in effect gave the industry — whose deposits were federally insured — a license to gamble with taxpayers’ money, at best, or simply to loot it, at worst. By the time the government closed the books on the affair, taxpayers had lost $130 billion, back when that was a lot of money.

But there was also a longer-term effect. Reagan-era legislative changes essentially ended New Deal restrictions on mortgage lending — restrictions that, in particular, limited the ability of families to buy homes without putting a significant amount of money down.

These restrictions were put in place in the 1930s by political leaders who had just experienced a terrible financial crisis, and were trying to prevent another. But by 1980 the memory of the Depression had faded. Government, declared Reagan, is the problem, not the solution; the magic of the marketplace must be set free. And so the precautionary rules were scrapped.

Thank God someone finally has brought to light this unimaginable situation soldiers are coming home to.  The news has been so consumed with the death of Michael Jackson, and while tragic, the coverage has been not only excessive, but also a striving competion between stations to have some new rumor and or fact.

Wake up media--no one holds any of you in particularly high regard, and the last week, with the coverage of Michael Jackson, when real news such as these soldiers plight has been silenced polls should be taken on how you rate.

The tragic economic outcomes of many families here in this country is inexcusable; when we used to be a strong and honorable country, concerned with "human rights" all over the world, and now Americans, those self consumed, narcissistic bankers, politicians, and CEO's have lost any sense of common decency, or concept of human rights to their own--have destroyed lives, some lives of individuals who are too old to begin again with their only concerns being how big is my bonus, and how good a lifestyle can I live by duping the hard working people out of THEIR money, or what do I need to say, or vote for to get re-elected.

No wonder the rest of the world mocks the United States--when celebrity news, affairs of politicians and ridiculous coverage of our President with his dog takes priority over real news--like in your article.

Wanted to add to my comment, and agree with the individual regarding non-citizens and/or illegals.

When individuals return who have risked their lives to protect our country--why should they not be entitled to a FREE education when any foreign or non-citizen is given priority and usually a free ride to college--they certainly have earned it.

Additionally, especially in the engineering and construction business, it is amazing just how many engineers are hired from foreign countries, work here through retirement and NEVER seek citizenship--soldiers should have the right to free education and first priority on these jobs.

God help us all. I say let Madoff and all the other greedy CEO's who robbed Americans of their hard earned savings pay it back and put our returning soldiers back to work.

The law says they have to provide a job but if they are no longer in business it is impossible and the ones who are must provide a comparable job that they are qualified to perform. So if they aren't qualifed they are up the creek.

I thought that their was a law that guadsmen ordered to serve active duty couldn't loose their jobs while serving.

Obviously if the company no longer exists neither can the job, but what about the cases where the company still exists, but has only downsized.

In response to Jolie - have they been building anything in your state with the "Government Funds"? So far, in my own state, Vermont I've only seen them working on projects that had already been schedualed. Unless you count paving crosswalks in red & white raised brick - covering them with asphault and....repainting them brick red & white!

The law states an employer MUST keep this job,, filled by a temp, but returned when the soldier does! IF within 1 year of deployment ie: Stop-loss and your fired!! Bushs plan all along. Along with the death benifits from guard to active is the diff of 25,000 for a dead National Guard or 400,000 for active duty..that is why NM was the first state to cover guard and reserves as active!! not DC they NEVER made that rule in DC.

John 1196892, most of us are just as sick of the media's negative comments about the economy, but this story deserves to be presented. I suggest it is disgraceful for our nation to repeatedly uproot our non-regular military units from their jobs and families for one-year tours of duty in combat zones, only to return to their homes and unemployment. Some of these non-regular National Guard and Reserve units have been uprooted three or more times. There should be somekind of employment safeguard for these reservists and guard members. Is it asking too much for some kind of job security for these veterans who willingly lay their lives on the line time and time again? And the situation cannot be blamed solely on Obama, as this started with the previous administration.

These people shouldn't even bother coming to their home state here, where the unemployment is 15 percent. We are going to lose some good people that way. It's amazing to drive through other states and see buildings with signs on the bricks, lights in the windows and cars in the parking lots. In Michigan, it looks like the mid-1980s all over again, except this time the businesses will be razed rather than mothballed for future use.

They have to come home to their state with their units and they have signed contracts with the National Guard to fulfill. All of them have to finish their contracts but they can apply to be transferred to another region/unit wherever they can find employment. However, the unit in that region could be up for active duty which would put them in Afghanistan probably. They do have the option of going to college on GI loans which they earned a sign up amount of free college -most signed up just for that free college benefit. They also earned active duty amounts towards GI Home loans too.

Stop blaming Bush/Cheney and take a course in Political Science. It will explain the actually workings of the government. The Senate And Congress with their career politicans put us in this mess. They wrote the laws which caused it. They approved the budgets that paid for any military action, they are the ones to blame!!!

At what point does any of this become Obama's responsibility. I wonder if the White House policy of Blame Bush will continue through the next election.

It is difficult to say when the Obama administration will become "responsible" for the mess Bush/Cheney and their administration put us in.  We are just now, 6 months into the Obama aministration, constantly (daily) discovering and uncovering the magnitude of their poor decisions.

I agree, Obama is now responsible for fixing the mess we have been put in for the last 8 years. But, it is impossible to believe that in just 6 months time that Obama would be able to fix "everything."  The problems are too enormous.

JH, please post a link to an "economic chart" out there that corroborates what you think you know about who and what caused the recession? The Democrats took more seats in Congress in 2006, yet did not have enough clout to reverse any of Bush's ignorant, red policies. This country never fully recovered from the recession that started in 2001, following the 9/11 attacks. Who was President when that all happened? What party had a majority in the house and senate back then? Quit blaming Obama and the Democrats for the Bush/Republican ignorance and screw-ups. This recession is their fault entirely.

In 2007 the Democrats passed legislation to raise the Minimum Wages...................spiral effect.....if you know how that works if not it is anything changes in the loop it will cause everything else to change. So you raise the minimum wage and you lose jobs. Why? Because simply stated if an employer has 4 people making a wage of $5 an hour and his budget allows for $20 of labor cost for an hour -- and that minimum wage goes to $6 an hour he can no longer afford 4 people so one person loses their job. To cover the 4 people the employer must raise his prices which raise his tax obligations, meanwhile his suppliers had to raise their prices as well and he is no better off than before so one person still loses their job.

In the long run the person making min. wage is worse off than they were because things they need to buy are now more expensive. So every time the min. wage rises people lose their jobs. Meanwhile the companies can't stay competitive so they either close down or move somewhere that labor costs are cheaper, or subcontract work to foreign companies to make which loses more jobs.

Blame the Senate and Congress for this mess. They are trying to hide behind "it's Bush's fault" and people are believing them! They need to all lose their jobs!

I knew of them and usd them when I worked at Automatic Signal Corp back in the late 60's.

Valmont Industries, WeldRite, PUMCO and Union Metal were the only manufacturers of street / freeway lighting poles, traffic signal poles and utility poles.

DAMN another old institution gone. Sad, but it will continue I am sure.

I beleive that America OWES these brave hero's a job for what they went thru over here.

Yes I am over here at 63 years old taking care of the soldiers.

I remember the same situation in the early 70's, when you came back, you couldn't buy a job. So, I went to college on the GI Bill. We need to protect our GI Bill, and restore it to what it originally was, to cover the actual costs of a college education for our returning veterans. It has been severly degraded, only covering a portion of the costs. This gives a workable alternative, in effect a cushion. In the Elkhart/Goshen area, we need more immigration enforcement, many jobs have been taken by people who can not speak english, I don't know if they are legal or illegal, but it should be looked into.

The new GI Bill covers tuition up to the highest in-state tuition for 4 years, includes a $1000/year book stipend and a monthly stipend that is equivalent to E-5 Basic Housing Allowance (average of about $1300/month)). This is available to people who have been on active duty since September 11, 2009. There are length of service requirements. See the link below.

Here, Here. My son was regular army and is going to school on the GI bill. I'm housing him for nothing at a sacrifice (I'm single) so that he can go to school. Hopefully when he finishes in 3 years there will be a job for him. School should be an option to ANY person has served especially in Iraq and Afganistan.

School would be great but a lot of these soldiers have families to support. Many spouses pick deployments as a perfect time to make an exit. Custody battles and messy divorces are often part of the "welcome home" a soldier recieves.

Our Government has an obligation to these soldiers. They should be first in line for government jobs & help with housing ect. They had the emotional stress of leaving friends and family behind, stress of combat, only to return home to more mental anguish.

Free Iran! yells a small inconsequential "voice". Thousands upon thousands of small insignificant "voices" are screaming their righteous indignation at their hardline dictators that run their country. They use their small "voice" in the hope that larger "voices" of more consequence will join them. "Voices" like the USA. But the USA seems to have lost its "voice", our leaders have larengitis when it comes to this issue. That is a sad truth. When did the USA decide to let other country's lead the free world, countries like the UK, and the entire EU have taken a stand against Iran, even small African countries have said enough is enough. Sadly the US has no "voice" on this issue. Why do I think it is so important to have a "voice" on this issue? First and selfishly, because if we helped to free Iran then it would be the largest blow to date against terrorism. Iran's hardline muslim clerics are the real leaders of the enemy that wants to destroy us. They use their countries oil money to fund Hamas, Hezzbollah, and even Al Queida! Where do you think they get the money for guns and bombs to kill us? All those attacks in Iraq...thats Iran. When Iran is free and friendly to the US all that stops! Second, we are Americans we have always had a "voice", ours has always been loudest in the pursuit of freedom and happiness. Other people find their "voice" because of us. I think God intended it to be that way. Finnally I say Remember Neda!! Remember a beautiful young girl who found her "voice" and was murdered for it! She was murdered by her own government for finding her "voice". The sad irony here, is that in Farsi Neda means "voice". So I call on the people of America to be Americans, and find your "voice". Find your "voice" and write your congressman write the news media; flood them with so many "voices" that the cacophony of sound overwhelms them and drives them to action. Find your "voice" and use it now,.....while you still have one! And above all else Remeber Neda!!!!!

No, no, no, no. I did three combat tours in Afghanistan and Iraq and each time I came home my job was waiting for me. The ESGR enforces laws that protect Guardsman's jobs. Unless the company has gone belly-up, the job or an equivalent MUST be given the employee when he returns. I suppose any number of companies would make it difficult for the employee but that is what the ESGR was created for. There a handful of folks I served with that either (a) didn't have a job when they left, (b) didn't properly notify their employers within the required time frame (30 days) that they were leaving, or (c) quit their job before they left and had no choice but to go job-hunting when they came back. Congress passed extremely tough laws that employers must comply with or they are heavily fined. The notion that most of these soldiers are somehow being screwed is patently and utterly false. Yes, some have had problems but the VAST MAJORITY of them are very well supported by their employers. This is a "problem" being made up out of whole cloth by these *j*a*c*k*a*s*s * liberal reporters and news organizations that hate the military and have no respect for our military.

                                        Jeff,

Wow, the article I read was very supportive of the soldiers, it did not seem to be anti-military at all. The were primarily talking about Guardsmen coming home to areas where the factories have closed down and right now that is fairly wide spread. Further an awful lot of young soldiers did not really have careers going when they left. In the past a military background gave you a leg up on the job hunt, but when there are virtually no jobs to be had it is a leg up to no where. I think the point is since we are supposed to be investing money in an effort to stimulate the economy wouldn't these soldiers be a good place to start. There is plenty of infrastructure that needs repairing why can't the National Guard be involved. We bring them in during a flood the try and secure weak dikes in the mid west all the time. Why don't we use them to secure these weak dikes before the floods.

Not only do you lose the leg up, it is harder to find a job as a citizen soldier because what employer wants an employee that will be gone one out of every 4 years.

Or, maybe because the terrorists that continue to attack the U.S. and other European countries are still out there. It's not like Dubya said, when he said, "Mission accomplished." He opened Pandora's box and it can't be put away, now.

Yeah, they've replaced them with about 6 million illegal immigrants.  The government only cares about workers to the extent of controlling anarchy.  As long as their own pockets are full, nothing else really matters to them.  Unemployment works very well into their NWO plan, since it will level the playing field for all peons to work for less than nothing.

Because some Americans consider a soldiers service and their willingness to lay down their lives for us, and the difficulties they are forced to deal with upon return to have great merit.

Let's not forget that the reason we are experiencing this world-wide recession is largely due to the irresponsible, reckless spending our pre-emptive, oil-for-profit war. Spending one billion dollars a month for five years while cutting taxes on the upper 1% of the wealthy and extending tax write-offs to the huge oil corporations and private, no-bid contractors is a little... visionless. TOO BAD OUR LEADERS DIDN'T HAVE ANY INSIGHT.

Heaven forbid people, should grow and provide MORE JOBS! I've NEVER seen such a dumb administration in the world or anywhere EVER.

They can always re-enlist in the active army. A military career is an excellent choice. I retired after 20 yrs.

You people who bash our military, should be ashamed of yourself. Doc.Toketee, I doubt you would enlist to protect our country.

No soldier has done anything to protect our country since WW2. They are being used as tools to prop up our dying empire. They are brainwashed, professional murderers and they are making the world much more dangerous for everyone.

Justin in Oregon--you referenced WWII and no soldier had done anything to protect our country. Do you not realize that WE were not only attacked in Pearl Harbor, BUT ALSO on 9/11.

I am very grateful to know that we have brave individuals willing to risk their lives to protect us--FROM OUR MOST RECENT ATTACK ON AMERICAN SOIL!

                                              Sandy,

The perpetrators of 9/11 were agents of the American and Israeli governments. It was an inside job. Also, our government knew Pearl Harbor was coming, and did nothing to stop it because they were itching to join the war. Pretty much everything you've been taught to believe about this country and its history is a lie. Sorry, I'm not willing to risk my life or murder other people over lies.

Agree with the notion that no illegals, or legal foreign hires, should have jobs that could be filled by citizen-soldiers. While the situation in Elkhart--and many other parts of the nation-- is certainly terrible, the fact is that many Guard Soldiers actually have better pay and benefits while on on Guard active duty than they do in their civilian jobs. Considering that much of the pay they get while deployed--to include combat pay-- is not taxed, I can only hope that while these good folks were serving overseas and getting news of the economy back home, they were doing all they could to sock that pay away. I applaud the Guard members who are taking advantage of the educational program to help themselves adapt to what is happening with this economy.

Thank God that there are people like the men and women who serve in the National Guard, who put themselves in harm's way for all of us.

The impact of George Bush's presidency will be felt for the next decade. The Bush- Cheney administration took full advantage of 9-11 and started a needless war in Iraq resulting in the greatest transfer of finacial wealth out of the public coffers and into the hands of their good buddies in the military-industrial complex, no bid contracts and very little oversight allowed these war criminals to steal the American people blind, their stewardship has left the country in financial ruin. Now our brave young men are coming home, no jobs, many facing bankruptcy. Now here's the real kicker, the bank ruptcy laws have changed, yes good old George helped the banking industry put it to the american people once again. The legislation was drafted by MBNA one of the largest credit card issuers at the time. Wake up everyone, Obama is not addressing the real needs of the American people, he's busy continuing the failed Bush adminsitration policy of handing over public funds to this corrupt banking industry thatt needs to be regulated to the hilt.

Steve is right, Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld and all the rest of thier cronies are the ones who set the stage for this disaster. Obama was elected into the situation. Unfortunately, Obamas tactic is to flood the economy with $$$$$$$$$$ and then just print more money.

Remind anyone here of Jimmy Carter? Inflation is surely the next wave (after to total fallout of the banks). The bankers are hedging on these homes with depreciated value hoping for a miracle from Washington. There will be no miracle from Washington so the banks will have to eat the housing loss.

Remind anyone of the savings and loan failures?

I attribute it (economic failure) mostly to Bush and now with the flooding of money into the inflation will squarely be on Obama. At least Obama isn't currently making an enemy of the world.
